What Are Credit Rating Sensitivities?
Rating sensitivities are the specific factors and thresholds an agency identifies as most likely to move a rating up or down from its current level.
How They Are Typically Framed
A rating rationale might state, for example, that a sustained improvement in interest coverage above a specified level could support an upgrade, while a deterioration in liquidity or a leverage increase beyond a specified threshold could trigger a downgrade. These statements are the sensitivities.
Why Agencies Publish Them
Publishing explicit sensitivities gives lenders, investors, and the company itself a transparent view of what the agency considers most decisive to the current rating, rather than leaving the rating logic opaque — it is one of the more actionable pieces of information in any rating rationale.
