The Four Pillars of Credit Rating
Business risk, financial risk, management and governance, and liquidity form the four broad pillars most Indian rating methodologies are built around.
Pillar 1: Business Risk
Covers the structural quality of the business — industry dynamics, competitive position, revenue visibility, and customer or supplier concentration.
Pillar 2: Financial Risk
Covers leverage, coverage ratios, profitability trends, working capital intensity, and the overall strength of the balance sheet and cash flows.
Pillar 3: Management and Governance
Covers promoter track record, succession planning, related-party transactions, and the transparency and reliability of financial disclosures.
Pillar 4: Liquidity
Covers near-term debt servicing ability — cash balances, unutilised bank lines, and headroom against upcoming maturities and covenants.
How the Pillars Interact
No single pillar determines the rating in isolation. A company can be financially strong but rated conservatively due to weak liquidity buffers, or operationally excellent but constrained by high leverage — the final rating reflects the combined weight of all four pillars, weighted according to the agency's sector-specific criteria.
