How Liquidity Affects Credit Ratings

Liquidity is often the most immediate driver of a rating action, because it speaks directly to near-term repayment ability.

Strong Liquidity Indicators

•      Cash and liquid investments comfortably covering near-term maturities

•      Meaningful unutilised headroom under working capital lines

•      No breach or near-breach of financial covenants

Weak Liquidity Indicators

•      High reliance on refinancing to meet upcoming maturities

•      Fully utilised bank lines with limited additional headroom

•      Delayed payments to lenders, suppliers, or statutory dues

Liquidity Can Override Other Strengths

A company with strong profitability and moderate leverage can still see its rating pressured, or placed on watch, if liquidity indicators deteriorate sharply, since near-term default risk is what a rating is ultimately trying to capture.
